Google Panda Update Reminds Us of the Importance of Backlinks
If you have been an online writer for more than a few months, then you will no doubt have heard of a backlink. A backlink, is in essence, just a link from someone else’s website to yours. Deep linking is another backlinking term that indicates a link deeper into your site, if your site has several pages. So a deep link would not be to the home page, but to a specific article, post or page on your site.
Why should you have backlinks going to your site?
I heard it describes recently that a backlink is just like someone casting a vote in your favor. In the eyes of the search engines, each backlink is another vote. A backlink coming from a more prestigious site that has authority might count as more than one vote. This backlink strategy is necessary to help your site stay stable when various factors “rock the boat” on the search engines.
You can also think of it as a life preserver if you use the boat terminology. It is natural for there to be swings up and down on the internet. Factors that are outside of our control can affect the position of sites in the SERPS. Natural disasters like the recent earthquake in Japan, and tsunami make knock the attention away from your sites. But having backlinks will keep your site above water in turbulent times.
So How Do You Get These Backlink Thingys?
Some backlinks come with time. These are organic backlinks that are connections or links to your site from folks who want to pass the information on. These may be clients or vendors of yours, or just people who are interested in your site.
However, you can create some backlinks yourself, by writing blog posts, or short articles that link to your site. This works best if you link to different pages in your site if you have them, because then the linking is more natural.
Another way to get backlinks is by guest posting on someone else’s blog and linking back to your site. And there are numerous other ways. The one thing you don’t want to do is get caught up in link exchanges, because they are just a waste of time, and won’t really help you. The best backlinks are from authoritative sites that are related to your topic, but backlinks are always good as long as the site linking to yours follows the TOS of your site.
