Spending time in the water is great for you and your family. Whether you enjoy scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, or simply playing with your kids in the ocean, you will need protection from the cold water.
First, consider the type of activity you will be engaged in. Some sports require a wide range of motion, like paddling a kayak. In that case, you may want a wetsuit that does not impair the movement of your arms or legs. A shorty may be appropriate as it has both short sleeve arms and legs. That allows you maximum mobility while still protecting the core of your body.
At the other end of the scale, an activity like scuba diving does not require much movement and full length sleeves and leggings will be acceptable. Either a Full Wetsuit or a Farmer John will work well.
Next, consider the thickness of the suit. The simple rule of thumb is “the thicker the wetsuit, the warmer you will be.” On the light protection side, a 1 millimeter wetsuit will work for warmer waters. On the heavy protection side, a 7mm Farmer John wetsuit will suffice in much colder areas. It is important to note that everyone has different sensitivities to temperature. Some people are chilled in the exact same water that someone else is warm in.
