Vintage Coffee Grinders in a Modern World

Somehow I turned into a bit of a coffee snob, it started gradual. I joined my community in supporting local coffee houses and avoiding Starbucks and Gas station coffee, previously I really just needed my caffeine fix and that was the extent of it.

Starbucks, I enjoyed because of their delicious Oreo cream brownie , which the bastards discontinued, so they should be boycotted anyway. Now that I was a coffee-house attendee I frequented enough to become friends with the sexy baristas and began to try samples of all the fancy cups they could mix up. I gradually began my descent into full on coffee snobbery.

It started with getting a french press and using store-bought ground coffee, now I grind my own. I also have a siphon coffee maker and a Keurig Coffee Maker.

I’m a coffee junkie and I recently got an awesome gift of a Vintage Coffee Grinder and it awakened a curiosity in me about coffee grinders and the effect they may have on flavor.

About Coffee Grinders

I often hear a rumor perpetuated that manual grinders will make a better cup than electric grinders. This is actually a bit of a misconception. A Burr Coffee Grinder makes a considerably better grind than a Blade Coffee Grinder.

Your average Coffee Grinder is a “blade grinder” it doesn’t really grind, it chops, and it chops unevenly making for some issues with french presses and espresso machines and less surface area on your beans.

Most manual grinders will be burr grinders, and a burr grinder actually grinds and smashes in a relatively even manner,

So, at face value “manual coffee grinders” are better than “electric coffee grinders” but it’s really a blade vs. Burr issue.

One can purchase a decent electric burr grinder and get an equally if not better grind than with a manual.

Collecting Vintage Manual Coffee Grinders

The main draw of a Vintage Manual Coffee Grinder has to be for appearances. It’s a relatively attractive piece, its functional and its a conversation piece. It’s perfect for those who try for the Country Kitchen look.

I have a manual coffee grinder, it’s not vintage and it’s not purely decorative. When I use my Siphon coffee maker or Make turkish coffee, I use the Manual Coffee grinder. I really appreciate the alchemy of the experience.

Turning whole beans into my beautiful steaming lifeblood, watching it boil and bubble in the siphon, it’s also quite a spectacle when entertaining guests. People really get into it, and it gives an appreciation for the drink we are about to share.
